 DSL Availability

Written by: SharpTelco Staff - Sep 5, 2008

DSL Availability is increasing everyday. The phone company and cable company understand that broadband service is the future of telecommunications. Today, basic dial tone phone service is a losing proposition for the major telco carriers and competition from satellite providers is putting competitive pressure on cable operators. Basic phone service used to be table stakes or a very dependable revenue stream for telephone companies. Today many consumers are seeking alternatives to basic wireline service by using cellular phones or broadband telephone using VoIP technology. To that end the major telco carriers are aggressively deploying DSL or ADSL service to get a broadband connection the the consumer's residence. Once the broadband connection is established there's additional revenue and the opportunity to grow additional services and protect their existing revenue. Cable companies are experiencing the same market pressure. If they can establish the broadband service, then they can offer dial tone using IP telephone service with VoIP technology while embedding themselves at the residence to also protect their existing revenue stream. Where's all this leading? Ever see the movie "Tombstone" where there's the wild shoot out at the OK Corral? I think we'll continue to see convergence of voice, video and data service while phone and cable companies become telecommunication providers and DSL availability will continue to improve until broadband service is comparable to dial tone.
